Commentaires longs: A total of 14 players were in the pit for this production. The musical director, Eric Stern, also played the piano. There were three woodwind players, two trumpet players, one trombone player, one percussionist, two violinists, one violist, one cellist, one harp player, and one bass player.

Joan Barber was standby for three roles in this production. In addition, she went on as Solange LaFitte at least once, although it seems that she was never listed as covering that role.

Avec : Rob Brydon, Brian Vernel (Bill), Joshua McGuire (Oliver)
Presse : "Thanks to Warchus’s directorial slickness the evening makes the grade as a thought-provoking start to the season. Overall, though, I'd whisper "Could do better"." Dominic Cavendish for The Telegraph

"It's lively, disputatious, and full of clued-up, irreverent humour." Paul Taylor for The Independent

"The debates will be familiar to many of us. But Oglesby [Playwright] has given them new life in a fast and furious play that crackles with intellectual energy." Michael Billington for The Guardian

"Future Conditional tries to use comedy and a cast of adults dressed in school uniforms to make sweeping points about the English education system. Playwright Tamsin Oglesby inveighs against academic selection and independent schools. She does so by giving us four scenarios so frequently chopped and changed that narrative flow is lost and the production starts to resemble a TV sketch show." Henry Hitchings for The Evening Standard

Commentaires : Reviews for the production were mixed, although there was unanimous praise for the amazing special effects by Paul Kieve. However, the public word-of-mouth was strong, attendances continued to grow, and the show received five Olivier nominations. In January 2012 Mark Evans and Siobhan Dillon took over the leads while Richard Fleeshman and Caissie Levy began rehearsals for a Broadway transfer. The Broadway production opened on April 23rd 2012 (previews from March 15th). The role of Oda Mae was performed by
Da’Vine Joy Randolph (who had played the role in the West End in December and January whilst Sharon D. Clarke was on leave.)
Presse : "It mostly lacks: heart and soul. For the rest, one is left to gawp at the ingenuity of Paul Kieve's illusions."
Michael Billington for The Guardian

"This may not be a great musical, but it is a highly entertaining one that looks set to keep audiences laughing, gasping and sniffing back tears for a long time to come."
Charles Spencer for The Daily Telegraph

"Worth going to?...I’d say yes – provided that...you are not expecting anything too subtle or classical."
Quentin Letts for The Daily Mail

"Paul Kieve's illusions thrill...It's all seamlessly inventive and full of synaesthetic pleasures, but it can't fully compensate for the shallowness in other departments."
Paul Taylor for The Independent

"With superb special effects and engaging performances, Matthew Warchus's production certainly has plenty of dazzle." Henry Hitchings for The Evening Standrad

Presse : "Does it provide the same quantity of standout, sing-at-home numbers that we saw in Matilda? Hard to say at first sitting – but what is clear is that Groundhog Day is as funny and as touching as you could wish, and it lands with the confidence of an instant classic." Dominic Cavendish for The Telegraph

"While the show is high-grade fun, I enjoyed it more for its dazzling theatrical expertise than for its much thinner emotional content." Michael Billington for The Guardian

"Eloquent about despair but also relentlessly amusing, Groundhog Day is a treat." Henry Hitchings for The Evening Standard

Mise en scène : Matthew Warchus
Chorégraphie : Peter Darling
Producteur :
Avec : Andy Karl (Phil Connors), Barrett Doss (Rita Hanson), Rebecca Faulkenberry (Nancy), John Sanders (Ned Ryerson)
Presse : "Repetition is an art of infinite variety as it’s practiced by Andy Karl in “Groundhog Day,” the dizzyingly witty new musical from the creators of “Matilda.”... “Groundhog Day” reimagines a much-loved film about instant karma with such fertile and feverish theatrical imagination that you expect to see it implode before your eyes." Ben Brantley for New York Times

"If a groundhog sees its shadow, there’ll be six more weeks of winter. If you see “Groundhog Day,” there’ll be 2 hours and 45 minutes of kinetic and sometimes witty but ultimately wearying antics. Fortunately, there’s a silver lining: musical-comedy dreamboat Andy Karl, who puts his own irresistible stamp on the arrogant TV weatherman played in the 1993 film by Bill Murray." Joe Dziemianowicz for New York Daily News

"While there are likeable, inspired elements in this musical adaptation of the great Bill Murray movie, time crawls as you wait for boorish weatherman Phil Connors to surrender to human kindness and true romance." David Cote for Time Out New York

"Unlike far too many musicals regurgitated from hit movies, Groundhog Day is a delirious reinvention with its own defiantly unique personality, a relentless forward-backward spin that leaves you smiling, exhilarated and giddy, much like the Tilt-a-Whirl ride that briefly occupies the stage in the show's second act." David Rooney for Hollywood Reporter

"As musical theater performers go, you couldn’t ask for a more personable fellow than Andy Karl. His high-energy athleticism kept “Rocky” on its toes. And his comic chops earned him plenty of notice in “On the Twentieth Century.” Now, in “Groundhog Day,” he proves he can carry an entire show on his back." Marilyn Stasio for Variety

Commentaires longs: Un magnifique spectacle
Presse : PAUL TAYLOR for THE INDEPENDENT says, "A bit of an identity crisis, strong on dynamic spectacle, squeezed as drama, and in two minds about how it wants to use music dramatically." KIERON QUIRKE for THE EVENING STANDARD says, "Ill-fated at conception, tedious and vulgar in execution." MICHAEL BILLINGTON for THE GUARDIAN says, "I had a perfectly good time at Drury Lane and, if Tolkien's trilogy is to be a stage spectacle, I don't see how it could be better done." CHARLES SPENCER for THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says, "The language is flat, portentous or twee, and there is barely a moment that makes you gasp...tiresome grandiosity with mind-rotting mediocrity" SAM MARLOWE for THE TIMES says, "A brave, stirring, epic piece of popular theatre that, without slavishly adhering to J.R.R. Tolkien’s novels, embraces their spirit. The show has charm, wit, and jaw-dropping theatrical brio; crucially, it also has real emotional heft."

The production was re-staged in the West End on November 24th (previews from October 25th) with all the principal cast returning from the Stratford cast, plus three separate teams of nine children, “Matilda” opened to widespread critical acclaim, fast becoming one of the most successful British musicals in modem history. Version 24

Our House (2002-10-Cambridge Theatre-London)

Type de série: Original
Théâtre: Cambridge Theatre (Londres - Angleterre)
Durée : 9 mois 3 semaines
Nombre : 331 représentations
Première Preview : Monday 07 October 2002
Première : Monday 28 October 2002
Dernière : Saturday 16 August 2003
Mise en scène : Matthew Warchus
Chorégraphie : Peter Darling
Producteur :
Avec : Michael Jibson (Joe Casey), Julia Gay (Sarah), Lesley Nicol (Joe ’s Mum), Ian Reddington (Joe’s Dad), Richard Frame, Oliver Jackson, Tameka Empson, Andrea Francis, Matt Cross, Mike Scott, James Beattie, Mark Hilton, Paul Kemble
Commentaires : On the surface this was another compilation “greatest hits” show of the “We Will Rock You” kind. However, the numbers were wrapped around a skilful narrative with inventive and cheerful choreography and a much praised central performance from Michael Jibson as Joe. Although the show received mostly enthusiastic notices, business was very patchy: a series of matinees were cancelled, then matinee days were re-arranged until unexpectedly the show won the 2003 Olivier Award for Best Musical of the Year. This gave it a boost, and it continued to run until mid-August, 2003 - a ten month run.
Presse : MICHAEL COVENEY for THE DAILY MAIL says, "There is something fresh and original here......incisive and imaginative production."

IAN JOHNS for THE TIMES says, "Our House comes as a welcome relief from the camp idolatry behind Mamma Mia! and We Will Rock You."

MICHAEL BILLINGTON for THE GUARDIAN did not like it much saying, "In the course of a long evening, the law of diminishing returns inevitably applies" And going on to say, "The musical groans under the burden of too much plot; and after a time the raucous sameness of the numbers begins to pall. "

NEIL SMITH for BBC ONLINE says, "Matthew Warchus's direction is slick and inventive, while the young cast are clearly having the time of their lives."

CHARLES SPENCER for THE DAILY TELEGRAPH gives a luke-warm notice saying, "Somehow the show adds up to less than the sum of its promising parts." And goes on to say, "Even fanatical admirers of Madness are likely to find themselves exhausted rather than elated."

NICHOLAS DE JONGH for THE EVENING STANDARD says, "A compelling, knife-sharp affair." He goes on to say, "Our House is that rare thing, an original musical."

PETER HEPPLE for THE STAGE, "Even though the group's songs are all similar in style, Tim Firth has done a good job concocting a plot around them. "

Avec : Denise van Outen
Commentaires : Originally part of the “Song and Dance” double-bill staged at the Palace Theatre over 20 years ago, this had now been expanded into a stand-alone piece. It had been substantially updated (to include the internet, e-mails and mobile phones) and re-written, with the unnamed girl writing home to Mum in Ilford (originally it was Muswell Hill - in 1982 Marti Webb was far more Jewish than Essex girl Denise van Outen). The show was still presented as a one-act song-cycle, now running for 90 minutes. There was much praise for Denise van Outen, and although the material itself received a mixed reaction, the show ran ten months. The BBC critic observed, "This may be the smallest show Lloyd Webber's ever written, but the score (to appropriately conversational lyrics by Don Black) contains several of his very best songs."
During the run Marti Webb returned to her old part and, following the West End run, subsequently toured the UK with the show, alternating with Faye Tozer and Patsy Palmer.
Presse : MICHAEL BILLINGTON for THE GUARDIAN says, "Although it has some good songs, it seems a slight piece that is scarcely rendered more plausible by the presence of the sassy, sexy Denise Van Outen."

RHODA KOENIG for THE INDEPENDENT says, "Lloyd Webber's music is laughably trite. Van Outen seems a nice girl, but her singing and acting are very average."

BENEDICT NIGHTINGALE for THE TIMES says, " She’s [Van Outen] at her best when Don Black’s often adroit, witty lyrics allow her to be sharp, funny and derisive about men."

CHARLES SPENCER for THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says, "It's trite, it's sentimental, it is profoundly second-rate."

NICK CURTIS for THE EVENING STANDARD says, "It feels old. Without Van Outen, I suspect it would feel even older."
